The Elevated
36” x 36” Oil on Canvas
During the late 1800’s to early 1900’s, train transportation was taking hold. Lake Shore Electric was one of the country’s premier interurban lines and ran 120 miles from Cleveland through Rocky River, Bay Village, Lorain, and Sandusky - out to Toledo. Many of Cleveland’s industrialists maintained lakeshore summer homes where they would join their families on summer weekends. By the late 1920’s, ridership on the interurbans was dying due to the advent of the automobile.
The interurban route through Bay Village was elevated above the Metro Park valley and sections have, over time, collapsed into the creeks. The Elevated is just upstream from Huntington Rapids. Artistic license has eliminated the graffiti that adorns the pillars. The original, very charming train station has been converted to a delightful restaurant that looks across the park to Lake Erie.
